What is a Transformational Career Experience?

It is an experience - How you feel, and what you get.

How can you have it? - by shift in the way you think, what you believe, and what you do.

Better to understand real experience for many of us:

lkdjfYou can be an engineer, project manager, finance professional, marketer, entrepreneur, investment banker, IT analyst, and you can have two very different career experiences.

Transactional

Transformational

Relationship with you, your talent, your future, your ambition

Relationship with the organization, the mission

Relationship with the leadership team - your supervisor, and their peers, bosses.

Deeper relationship.

Sustainability.

How do you maintain this experience.  Sustain this experience.  Because it is hard.  People crossed.  Political and ideological differences.  Tempers, interpersonal bumps.  Natural to shrink and resolve to - will only do as much as I am supposed to.  Why should i do more when they get the credit.  Why do more if they don't recognize or appreciate.  These internal conversations are real.  When you are clear on your talent, your unique value, your career trajectory, your vision for your career, it becomes easier to sustain.  Not as stressful psychologically.  Mental health steady.  You can go that 1000% for the boss who actively dismisses you.  Who does not like you.  Because you know, what you do is a reflection on you, but more importantly, what you are doing is ultimately serving your mission, your long term vision for your career.

Why now?

Upheavel in market.  industry turmoil.  What was once considered stable and steady, no longer is.  Economy, industry, companies, functions change at a rapid pace.  Transformational career experience, you are easier to adjust.  You are looking for mission alignment.  Everything else is transient.  Transactional career experience very stressful.  Tasks change, job change rapidly.  Constantly upgrading skills to stay relevant.  Competing with younger, cheaper talent with same skills or better.  Have more energy and enthusiasm because they are launching their career.  10+ years into your career - if you don't transform, it will be difficult to find or stay employed.

Transformational career - peace of mind.  Ease in transitioning.  Focused on big picture.  Added benefit or ability to discover opportunity and influence outcomes that best fit you.

Artificial intelligence  - making high level routine tasks easier.  Law reviews.  Task that was performed by junior lawyers.  Talent building step.

Means you are now a leader or agent.  Resource - transactional.  They are quickly dispensed with when times get tough or automation kicks in.

Understanding real experience

Security in job
Title is a big part of your identity
Skill and experience are your connection to the organization
Relationships with people depends on the quality of people and leaders

Transformational
Security in clarity of value, clarity of your mission, and skill in creating conviction in leaders - see and feel your value and they need it.

Vision for talent is your identity, your North Star. It guides everything you do and simplifies important decisions

Connection with companies is via mission. You see your mission in their mission.

Relationships are deep, and rooted in service. You rise above the pettiness. You are insulated from the effects of toxic people leaders and cultures. Because what you do with your time and opportunity at hand is above all. It is the opp to build talent skill experience and achievements.  Your focus, your resolve, your center is unshaken.  You move with grace day to day, task to task, project to project.

Transactional experience - mental health takes a toll.  Manifests physically.  Heart disease.  Depression.  Addictions.

IS IT RIGHT FOR YOU?

This is a personal decision.  Of course I believe everyone deserves this experience.  You are unique, and no matter what field you are in, you bring your own unique expression to it.  With your unique value, comes the opportunity to identify your unique vision and mission.  It will take work.

Or you can choose to simply do nothing.  To carry on as you have and place weight on your skills, experience and credentials.  Hoping you don't land a job in a toxic environment, working alongside toxic people, or for a toxic leader.  It's a risk, but now you know it is a risk you are willing to take.

WHY NOW?

The nature and language of work and jobs is antiquated.  Origins in the Industrial revolution.  Factory line workers.  Skills and abilities mattered in that economic era.  No such thing as learning on the job.  Needed skills first BEFORE you got the job.

We live in different times.  Skill is important yes.  But it is transient.  Constantly changing and evolving.  More important is capacity and willingness to grow skill than the skill you already possess.  What is necessary before you get invited to join a team - mission alignment.  You are clear on your mission, and it aligns with the greater mission of the organization and the leaders leading the organization.  Important to be clear on your mission so you know you are getting more than compensation.  No idea of your mission, and you will find your job soul drenching.  You will feel like you give more than you get.  It will take you to a place of bitterness, apathy and resignation.  But you can't leave because you need the paycheque.  And you don't want to have to find another job because you may not get anything as good as you have now.

WHAT DO YOU NEED?

Three things.  Clarity on you.  Clarity on internal world of organizations and hiring leaders.  Effective way to co-create opportunities to work together.  Driven by broader mission, big picture.  Not the need for security and paycheque.  The less you focus on it, the more you actually get!  Counterintuitive.

HOW CAN I HELP YOU?

IT'S NOT WHAT YOU KNOW, IT'S WHO YOU KNOW.

Updated...

IT'S NOT WHO YOU KNOW, IT'S WHO "GETS" WHAT YOU CAN DO FOR THEM.

GROUPS OF PEOPLE:

Three groups of people.  Resources.  Agents and Leaders.

Resources - needed for getting things done. Skill and experience is important.  But as soon as company finds a way to automate or reduce costs, this is the first group to be let go.

Agents - agents of success.  Immersed in the organization at every level.  Focus on the big picture.  Strategic objectives.  Driving the organization forward.  Mission oriented.  Aligned with leaders.  This is the group that is sought out in the market place.  They are in demand.  They aren't a cost.  Drive top line growth.

Leaders - broader vision for the organization.  Know where it needs to go.

Doesn't align with org chart.  Can find leaders and agents at frontline.  Sometimes people in leadership roles - adopt resource mindset.  Focus on their own needs, protecting their jobs.  Behave in small and petty ways.

Transactional experience - Resources.

Transformational experience - Agents and Leaders.

What does this mean?  Sets you up for leadership roles.

Why should it matter?

You have invested a lot in yourself. But those who make decisions that affect your career don’t see it or care. They will take in the info you put in front of them and draw conclusions about you.

Example:

Smart and capable but your resume is awkward and confusing, dismiss you.

Walk into an interview shy and not well dressed. Could take you out.

Nothing worth doing is easy

Easy is to do nothing. Continue the way you have

Difficult to want more and go for it.
I made that easy for you. Don’t need to figure it out for yourself. I’ve done the heavy lifting. Proven it in my own career. And now broken it into systems and process. Just have to follow.

Relationships sour over time. People’s quirks and annoying habits. Differences and conflicts. Tasks get boring. When you are mission driven, you are Teflon!  Nothing shakes you. Bad leaders. Toxic environments. Nothing. In transactional experience, it will wear you down. Either quit or disengage and go through the motions.  Forced out sooner or later.

Mental health and wellness are a priority because so many people live this experience. Band aid solution. Cute is deeper. You build immunity.

Is this just being a yes man.  Not at all. Bid difference between a yes man and mission alignment. Yes man does everything they are told. Mission alignment means you are partnering with leader to achieve a specific outcome that helps them and you.
